Hunn
Stone Circle in Norway
Another site on the Østfold "Prehistoric Road". Nine stone circles and a number of burial mounds can be seen here. Excavated circles have contained cremations from the late 1st millennium BC. Nearby is a small rock carving.
Begby Helleristninger
An interesting composition. Two boats in which the crew are represented by full figures rather than the single lines sometimes used. Note the different boat designs with a double line outline on one and a single line on the other. Bottom left is a two-wheeled cart drawn by two clearly-identifiable animals. Bottom right is a different design of a two-wheeled cart drawn by two more stylised animals.
Hornnes
Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Norway
Just across the E6 from Solberg is Hornnes - another rock art site on "The Prehistoric Road".
21 ships on an almost vertical rock face all pointing to the sea. The detail is so clear that it is possible to date them from their design - to the late Bronze Age.
Solberg
Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Norway
In the Østfold region near the border with Sweden is the route 110 between Skjeberg and Fredrikstad known as "The Prehistoric Road" (Oldtidsveien) due to the large number of ancient sites along the route.
It is particularly rich in rock art and an English language booklet The Rock Carving Tour, Østfold gives details of all the sites including the non rock art ones. The route can conveniently be added to the Swedish sites covered in the more extensive Rock Carving Tour, Bohuslän (English booklet also available). All these sites are well-signposted with parking and interpretation boards.
Alta
Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Norway
This is rock art in the land of the midnight sun - the Finnmark area of Norway. The carvings in this Unecso Work Heritage site were not discovered until 1973. It is estimated that there are between 2500 and 3000 carvings dating back to around 4200 BC. They show people, animals, boats, fish and weapons. The Visitor Centre is open until 11pm in the summer months.
Austre Åmøy
Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Norway
The small island of Austre Åmøy north of Stavanger used to be somewhat remote but it is now on the E39 connected to the mainland by an impressive series of undersea tunnels and bridges.
It has a large collection of rock art with 10 different panels of which the more important are signposted.
Her hadde den
